The population drop continued in China even after the one-child, one-family policy was abolished.
The Chinese Bureau of Statistics reports that China's population has decreased for the second consecutive year.
China will have 1.409 billion people living there in 2023, a 0.2% decline of 2.7 million from the current population.
China's population fell for the first time since 1961 earlier in 2022.
China had 1.41 billion people living there in 2022, an 850,000 reduction from the previous year.
The death toll rose to 1.11 million in 2023, the highest level since 1974, a 6.6% increase.
On the other hand, the birth rate dropped to nearly 9 million, the lowest level in recorded history, by 5.7%.
It should be mentioned that the Chinese government has long promoted increased birthrates as a means of averting a potential problem brought on by the country's aging population.
In order to do this, it has also been declared that couples that have more children would receive various incentives; nevertheless, the majority of these couples are not prepared to become parents.
India rose to the top of the global population rankings in 2023.
