DATING WITH THE BOMBS

Witnesses claimed that thousands of Palestinians escaping from the north dragged themselves past damaged and bombed buildings in a long line.

They were instructed to relocate along the main Salah al-Din Road to the south of the Wadi Gaza wetlands by the Israeli military. The 2.3 million people that make up Gaza are already densely populated in hospitals, schools, and other locations in the south due to the large number of displaced people.

Um Haitham Hejela and her young children were taking refuge in a makeshift tent at Gaza City's main Al Shifa hospital, one of thousands of people still inside the encircled north.

"Water and food are absent. My son has to wait in line for three or four hours in order to get water. We don't have bread because they attacked bakeries."

With ground troops having moved in to cleave the narrow coastal strip in two amid fierce urban fighting amid the rubble of buildings, Israel's declared goal is to destroy Hamas. Israel has been bombarding Gaza from the air, land, and sea.

Clashes between militants and Israeli forces were reported by Palestinian media close to Gaza City's al-Shati (Beach) refugee camp. The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed that its fighters had destroyed an Israeli tank in Gaza City.

Reuters was unable to confirm either of their claims from the battlefield.

Regarding Yahya Sinwar, the most senior Hamas leader in Gaza and a presumed key organizer of the Oct. 7 attacks, there was no update from Israel. Israel declared on Tuesday that he was encircled within his bunker.
